Can I Install Double Glazing on a Listed Building?

Listed buildings are protected by a law called the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. The law covers both the inside and outside of the building. You need to ask for permission when:

  • You want to replace the windows with a new style.
  • You want to use different materials for the frames.
  • You want to change the type of glazing, like going from single to double glazing.
  • You want to paint the existing windows a different colour.
  • You want to replace the glass, which means getting rid of the original glass.

If you can’t have double glazing in your house, you may want to consider using secondary glazing instead. Planning permission may still be required however, as this product does not impact the external appearance of your property, planners may allow this instead. You can still benefit from improved thermal performance and noise reduction.
