How Deep do Foundations Need to be for a Porch?

Building a porch base is like building an extension to your house. Some people think that because a porch is lighter, the foundation doesn’t need to be very deep. But that’s not always true. You can’t know for sure how deep the foundation needs to be until you dig up the ground and check for any areas that were filled in with soil. If there are any, you’ll have to dig a trench through that layer until you reach solid ground. This will give the porch a strong foundation.

Usually, trench foundations are 650-1000mm deep. But the depth of the foundation also depends on factors like tree roots, drains, and underground services.

An Anglian porch foundation includes:

  • Removing the existing hard standing, top soil, and vegetable matter.
  • Excavating a trench deep enough to support the porch structure.
  • Filling the trench with mass concrete to create a solid base for the brickwork.
  • Finally, a cosmetic brick facing is constructed to match the existing property.
