Bay Windows

Bay windows are usually made up of three or more window panes, extending outwards in an arc or square to create a feature window. It provides extra internal space, floods a room with light and the curved design makes for impressive panoramic views.

While you'd do well to tell a bay and a bow window apart at first glance, there's a simple way to tell the difference. A bay window is usually comprised of three panes with a fixed central pane and an angled window to each side that opens. Whereas a bow window might be made up of four or five panes and tends to be rounded, so it appears like a half-circle from the exterior.

Bay windows come in several styles, including splay bay, single-end bay, a bow window and a square bay. In addition to their shape, bay windows also come in structural and non-structural styles. If you are replacing an existing bay window then it is likely that you will not need planning permission. An oriel window is like a bay window, but it juts out from the wall. Cantilevers or corbels joined to an external wall support the structure, instead of walls linked to the ground. In the past they improved views on narrow streets, often so people could see down to the sea. Modern oriel bay windows sit on the ground floor, first or second floors, and sometimes even span two floors. We offer oriel windows, but we call them plant-on windows.
